In India the meaning of secularism is not just confined to the mere separation of the state and the church (religious institutions and organizations). It represents much more. In India,it is a way of living.
According to me the main facets of Indian Secularism are:
1) SEPARATION of State and Religion. (It is the original definition)
2) COEXISTENCE between all religions and social groups.
3) Creation of SYNCRETIC CULTURE.
4) United OPPOSITION to retrograd thinking and fundamentalism; Waging STRUGGLE against bigotry, prejudice, stereotyping and related forms of narrow-mindedness and dogmas.
5) Being PROGRESSIVE, LIBERAL and MORE SENSITIVE towards other social groups.
6) Promoting PEACE, HARMONY and RATIONALISM in society.
A person who agrees with the above points abides by Secularism.
Here is a song that truly represents the spirit of Indian Secularism.
